Engineering and Projects Director (Permanent)

Reporting to the President & CEO, you will provide strategic leadership and direction for engineering and project delivery functions, guiding the diverse portfolio of capital and sustaining initiatives from vision through execution. With a collaborative and empowering approach, you will nurture and develop a high-performing team, while fostering a culture grounded in safety and operational excellence. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to align technical outcomes with organizational priorities, champion innovation, and ensure projects are delivered with precision and accountability.

What you’ll accomplish:

Lead and mentor a dynamic team of engineers, technical specialists and project management personnel embodying Orano’s Leadership Model to:

  • Deliver an annual portfolio of projects, ranging in value from $20M to $50M by directing project teams at the McClean Lake Operation (MLO) and Saskatoon office
  • Support the needs of the MLO to reliably and safely meet production targets, understanding the immediate, medium and long-term challenges and goals
  • Direct, support and monitor consulted engineering and project delivery services in the development and execution of engineered designs and projects
  • Effective delivery of engineering and projects including cost, schedule and quality management
  • Implement Orano standards in terms of Project Management
  • Embrace and support Operational Excellence efforts and OE Culture, 
  • Comply with all Orano health, safety and environmental policies, practices and procedures
  • Promote and adhere to Orano’s Values: Safety and Security, Team Spirit and Cohesion, Continuous Improvement, Customer Satisfaction, Ethics, Transparency and Dialogue, Respect and People Development

 

Be a Champion for:

  • Manage a team of 30 employees
  • Sound project management methods, commensurate with scale and risks of projects as defined in Orano’s project management system
  • Technical evaluation and solution assessments across the company to find and iterate towards the minimum technical solution to problems, apply Design-to-Cost / Value Engineering principles where appropriate, to generate and achieve the best business results
  • Assessing risk, deploying mitigations and applying safe work practices
  • Annual and long-term preparation for sustaining and improvement projects for prioritized and optimal deployment of capital
  • Continual improvement of engineering and project delivery methods by deployment of Orano projects standards, Operational Excellence tools and techniques for problem solving, workplace efficacy, and transparent management
  • Orano Canada’s values of: Safety and Security, Team Spirit and Cohesion, Continuous Improvement, Customer Satisfaction, Ethics, Transparency and Dialogue, and   Respect and People Development

 

Plan and Integrate: 

  • The annual sustaining and project capital portfolio and associated budget to deliver benefits for the MLO
  • Medium and long-term continual improvement objectives of the department
  • Adjustments to engineering and project resources as required for project portfolio needs
  • Collaboration with the MLO, the ultimate customer for all engineered output and project outcomes

 

Implement:

  • Methods to create, support and monitor high-performance cross-functional and cross-departmental project teams
  • Risk assessment and mitigation, and opportunity identification and capitalization of project delivery and for project impact on the operation
  • Measurements and metrics to monitor performance and make data-driven decisions
  • A retention and growth plan to maintain a high performing team that holds the critical competencies and knowledge to support the MLO, collaborating in an environment that encourages professional development

 

Qualifications and skills we’re seeking:

  • 15+ years of progressive engineering and project delivery experience including experience in the management and development of a team
  • A university degree in Engineering; Registered as a Professional Engineer in Saskatchewan with APEGS
  • Certification in Project Management (PMP) is considered an asset
  • A graduate degree with specialization in Engineering Management (MEM) or Business Administration (MBA) is an asset
  • Identify and implement performance improvement and cost saving measures wherever applicable
  • Foster the ability for teams to scrutinize Management of Change requests for valid business cases and timely payback and personally challenge major capital initiatives for the same
  • Must have excellent management and communication skills both written and oral
  • Must incorporate every effort to encourage and foster a strong safety culture

 

Work Location & Travel:

  • Based in Saskatoon with business trips to site when it is required
  • International and domestic travel is required
